Which Schlage Models This Applies To

The Encode (BE489) is WiFi-native, no hub required. The Connect (BE468/469) runs on Z-Wave and needs a smart-home hub. The Sense (BE479) uses Bluetooth and pairs directly to your phone. You’ll find the model code on a sticker inside the battery compartment or on the edge of the mounting plate.
Here’s where owners get tripped up: the Connect and Sense share the same exterior footprint, but the Encode has a thicker interior escutcheon to house the WiFi radio. If you’re replacing an older Connect with an Encode, the bore hole depth must be at least 1-3/8 inches. Many California doors built between 1985 and 2005 were drilled to 1-1/8 inches, which means the Encode won’t seat flush without re-boring. We check this before we quote.

Signs Your Schlage Smart Lock Installation Is Failing
- The touchscreen goes dark or registers phantom touches. This usually means the capacitive layer is separating from the glass, which happens faster in desert climates where daytime heat hits 105°F and nights drop to 65°F. The thermal cycling fatigues the adhesive.
- The deadbolt throws halfway and jams. The motor gearbox is stripping. Schlage uses a nylon gear in the Connect series that wears after roughly 8,000 cycles - about five years for a front door with two adults coming and going.
- “Low battery” warnings every two weeks despite fresh AAs. The voltage regulator on the main board is failing. Alkaline batteries in warm garages self-discharge faster, but if you’re swapping them monthly, the board is drawing excess current.
- The lock pairs to your phone but won’t respond to commands. The Bluetooth or Z-Wave antenna connection has loosened. We’ve found this especially common after DIY installs where the interior plate was overtightened, flexing the PCB.
- The key override works, but the motor won’t turn. The clutch mechanism between the motor and the deadbolt tailpiece has sheared. This is a full interior assembly replacement - not a field-repairable part.

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check the model number, measure your bore depth with a ruler, and confirm your door is between 1-3/8 and 2 inches thick - all of that helps when you call. You can also test whether the key override still works, which tells us whether the issue is electronic or mechanical.
Where DIY goes wrong: the deadbolt tailpiece must align precisely with the strike plate, and Schlage’s smart locks are less forgiving of misalignment than their mechanical deadbolts. Overtighten the mounting screws and you’ll crack the PCB. Cross-thread the cylinder set screw and you’re drilling it out. And if your door has a metal edge wrap, the bore needs deburring or the lock will bind in six months.
