Which Medeco Models This Applies To
Medeco’s residential deadbolt line breaks into three families, and getting the right one matters more than people think. The Maxum 11⁄600 series is the thick-door workhorse you’ll see in California ranch homes built between 1965 and 1995, those solid-core entry doors that measure 13⁄8″ to 13⁄4″. The Maxum 11⁄500 fits standard 13⁄8″ doors. The X4 and Biaxial cylinders drop into either housing but use different keyways entirely, and that’s where owners get stuck, they order a cylinder online, it arrives, and the key won’t even enter because they bought X4 for a Biaxial lock or vice versa.
Check the face of your key: Biaxial stamps show angled cuts with a “B” prefix, X4 keys carry a straight sidebar groove and “X4″ marking. The deadbolt housing itself has a small sticker on the edge, usually above the bolt, with the series number worn half-off after twenty years. If the sticker’s gone, measure the backset, the distance from the door edge to the center of the cylinder hole. California tract homes from the 1970s and 1980s are split almost evenly between 2⅜” and 2¾” backsets, and Medeco makes both but does not mix them in the same box.

Signs Your Medeco Deadbolt Installation Is Failing
- Key sticks or hangs at the 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock position. This usually means the sidebar pins are wearing unevenly, or dust and coastal salt air have gummed the lubricant. In California, we see this constantly in homes within three miles of the coast, where the marine layer finds its way into every mechanism.
- Bolt extends but won’t fully retract without jiggling. The tailpiece connecting cylinder to bolt is fatiguing, or the bolt itself is binding in a strike plate that shifted as the door frame settled. California’s clay soils and seasonal moisture swings push door frames out of square faster than owners notice.
- Loose cylinder rotates in the door. The mounting screws have stripped the door substrate, or the cylinder collar has cracked from overtightening during a previous DIY install. Once the cylinder wobbles, the pin chambers misalign and accelerated wear follows.
- Key works from outside but not inside, or reverse. The split spindle has cracked, or the interior thumbturn assembly has separated from the tailpiece. This is a common failure point on Maxum units after fifteen to twenty years of daily use.
- Door rattles in frame when locked. The strike plate is loose or the bolt is no longer engaging the full 1″ throw. In California’s earthquake country, a deadbolt that doesn’t fully seat is a lock in name only.

DIY or Call Us?
There’s a short list of things an owner can safely check. Verify the strike plate screws are tight and full-length, the short screws that come with most locks only bite into the door jamb and pull out under stress. Try a graphite-based lubricant on a sticking key, never WD-40, it attracts dust and turns to paste. Confirm the door isn’t swollen from recent rain, California’s dry winters followed by March storms can swell a door enough to bind the bolt.
Where DIY goes wrong: drilling a new bore without a door jig leaves the cylinder hole misaligned with the edge bore, and the tailpiece binds or snaps. Mortise pockets in older California homes are rarely standard depth, shave too little and the faceplate gaps, shave too much and the lock body floats. And if you’re working with a Medeco cylinder, the sidebar pins are under spring pressure, disassemble one without the right follower tool and the springs launch into your carpet, never to be found.
