• The key catches at the 3 o’clock position. This usually means the bottom pin stack has worn a slight ledge in the keyway, or the cut depths no longer match the pin heights after years of metal-on-metal wear. • The key works in one Kwikset lock but not another that was keyed alike. One cylinder has developed a burr or the key was cut to the worn condition of the first lock rather than the original code. We cut to factory code, not to a worn key.
• The bow (the head of the key) has cracked or the shoulder is rounded. This is physical failure, often from using the key as a pry tool or from the pot metal used in some aftermarket blanks. A cracked bow will eventually snap off in the lock.
