Which Abloy Models This Applies To

The critical gotcha: Protec2 cylinders are not backward-compatible with Protec housings. Model numbers are stamped on the lock faceplate, usually hidden by the strike plate edge. Signs Your Abloy Deadbolt Installation Is Failing
- Key sticks at the 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock position. This usually means the disc detainers inside the cylinder are wearing asymmetrically. Abloy’s rotating disc system is precise, but California’s hard water mineral dust settles into keyways and acts like fine gritpaper over years of use.
- Bolt extends fully but feels mushy or loose. The tailpiece connecting cylinder to bolt mechanism has likely developed play. In older Protec installations, the zinc alloy tailpiece can crystallize in our inland heat, particularly in Riverside and San Bernardino counties where attic-adjacent doors see 140-degree summer surface temps.
- Thumb turn rotates without moving the bolt. The cam driver has sheared or the set screw has backed out. This happens when the door has settled and the bolt scrapes the strike plate, forcing the mechanism to fight friction it wasn’t designed for.
- Door won’t latch unless you lift or press the handle. Frame shift from California’s clay-heavy soils, especially in the Sacramento Delta and hillside Los Angeles neighborhoods, throws off deadbolt alignment. The lock isn’t failing; the geometry is. But the fix still requires reinstalling the strike and often re-mortising the jamb.
- Visible corrosion on the exterior escutcheon. Marine-layer salt air in coastal California eats at plated finishes. Once moisture breaches the seal, the internal springs start rusting. At that point, cleaning helps briefly, but the spring set is already compromised.
