Sargent Lock Rekeying in California, CA | Strongbox Lock & Safe Co. of California

Sargent Lock Rekeying: The California Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Sargent-compatible lock rekeying for residential and commercial cylinders throughout California, with typical installed pricing from $45 to $85 per cylinder depending on the series and keyway complexity. Most jobs are completed same day, and we carry the full range of Sargent key blanks and pinning kits on every truck. Homeowners usually discover they need a rekey after a move, a lost key, or when a tenant or employee turnover leaves them unsure who has access - it’s the kind of thing you put off until one morning you realize you can’t account for every copy floating around.

Which Sargent Models This Applies To

Sargent has manufactured cylinders in several distinct series over the decades, and the rekeying approach differs materially between them. The LA series (mortise cylinders), the 6300 line (rim cylinders), and the 10-line and 11-line bored locks are the three families we encounter most often in California homes and small commercial buildings. The keyway profile - whether it’s the standard Sargent “S” keyway, the LA keyway, or the restricted Sectional keyways - determines which blank we cut and whether your existing keys can be retained in a master-key system.

To identify your series, look for the Sargent stamp on the face of the cylinder or the latch case; the 10-line and 11-line typically carry a small oval badge. If the lock was installed before 1995, there’s a fair chance it’s the older 6-pin LA architecture rather than the current 7-pin standard. We stock both OEM Sargent pinning kits and quality aftermarket equivalents from LAB and HPC; for master-keyed systems or institutions with existing key control policies, we generally recommend staying with Sargent factory pins to maintain bitting tolerances. For a standard residential rekey after a move, the aftermarket kits perform identically at a lower parts cost, and we pass that difference through.

Signs Your Sargent Lock Rekeying Is Failing

  • Key turns but the bolt doesn’t retract. The tailpiece or cam has worn out of alignment with the plug, often from decades of key torque in California’s dry climate where lubricants evaporate faster than in humid regions. The cylinder itself may rekey fine, but the linkage needs inspection.
  • Key sticks or requires jiggling at certain angles. Worn pin chambers create binding points that rekeying alone won’t solve; the plug bore has ovalized from grit ingress, common in coastal California where airborne salt accelerates wear. We measure plug-to-shell tolerance before quoting.
  • Different keys operate the same lock intermittently. This indicates extreme pin wear or a “ghost key” phenomenon where multiple bitting depths have worn into overlapping shear lines. Rekeying restores proper pin stacks, but we also check for chamber damage that would cause rapid recurrence.
  • Key extraction requires force or the key comes out rotated. The plug has shifted axially in the cylinder housing, usually from a missing or fractured retainer clip. Rekeying without addressing the retention issue wastes your money; we replace the clip as part of the service.
  • Recent rekey by another locksmith already feels loose. Improper pin sizing or failure to repack the cylinder with dry graphite leaves pins riding high. California’s temperature swings, particularly in inland valleys, expand and contract metal enough to exaggerate a sloppy rekey into a failure within months.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Our flat pricing for Sargent rekeying in California runs $45-$65 per standard residential cylinder and $65-$85 for commercial-grade 10-line/11-line or master-keyed systems. That includes disassembly, pin replacement, key cutting for two new keys, and reassembly with proper lubrication. If we discover worn chambers, a damaged cam, or a cracked plug during the work, we’ll show you the condition and quote any additional parts before proceeding - no surprises.

The price you hear on the phone is the price on the invoice. We don’t charge trip fees within our standard California service area, and every rekey carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise backed in writing. If the key doesn’t turn smoothly or the cylinder binds within that window, we return and make it right with no paperwork to file.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely verify the symptoms above and read the model number off the cylinder face - that’s useful information to have when you call. What we don’t recommend is purchasing a pinning kit and attempting the rekey yourself. Sargent cylinders use small coil springs under compression; without a proper plug follower, the spring stack launches across the room and the top pins scatter. You’ll also need the correct key gauge to read the bitting and a code book to translate it to pin sizes. We’ve responded to more than a few California homes where a well-intentioned owner disassembled the cylinder, lost parts, and now needs a full replacement rather than a simple rekey. The cost difference is significant. If you’re unsure, call us at (833) 294-4584 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing. We tell you the price before the truck rolls, and we put everything in writing - that part has never changed.
