Sargent Deadbolt Installation in California, CA | Strongbox Lock & Safe Co. of California

Sargent Deadbolt Installation: The California Owner’s Guide

Sargent deadbolt installation in California typically runs $280-$480 for a complete grade-1 or grade-2 setup, including the lockset, strike reinforcement, and labor, with same-day scheduling available in most metro areas. We stock Sargent 4870, 4875, and 4800 series deadbolts on our trucks, along with the matching 1-3/8″ to 2-1/8″ door prep kits needed for retrofit work. Most homeowners realize their Sargent deadbolt needs attention when the thumb turn grows stiff in our dry inland heat, the bolt starts sticking after years of Santa Ana dust working into the mechanism, or they discover their 1980s-era single-cylinder unit no longer meets their insurance requirements.

Which Sargent Models This Applies To

Sargent deadbolts fall into several product lines, and matching the right series to your door prep saves a return trip. The 4800 series covers standard residential single and double-cylinder deadbolts in satin chrome, bright brass, and oil-rubbed bronze finishes. The 4870 and 4875 lines are the heavy-duty grade-1 commercial units we see on office suite doors throughout downtown Los Angeles and the financial district in San Francisco, built with solid brass cylinders and hardened steel bolts that resist sawing and prying.

To identify your model, check the face of the cylinder for the Sargent name and a four-digit number. The backset, the distance from the door edge to the center of the cylinder, will be either 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″. California tract homes built from 1965 through 1995 almost always used the 2-3/8″ backset, while commercial and newer residential construction in California typically runs 2-3/4″. We carry both backsets and the adjustable strikes to match.

On OEM versus aftermarket: Sargent’s factory cylinders use proprietary keyways that aftermarket blanks often misfit. We source genuine Sargent pinning kits and cylinders through authorized distribution, though for older discontinued lines we sometimes machine aftermarket housings to spec. Gil Sanderson learned early in his training at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College that a lock that does not accept its own key smoothly is worse than no lock at all, so we never substitute a “close enough” cylinder.

Signs Your Sargent Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

  • The thumb turn grinds or requires two hands. In California’s low-humidity climate, particularly east of the coastal range, the lubricant inside Sargent’s deadbolt mechanism dries to a gummy residue over seven to ten years. The bolt still throws, but the cam mechanism is riding metal on metal, which will eventually shear the internal tailpiece.
  • The key works from one side only. This usually means the cylinder set screw has walked loose, a common issue in Sargent single-cylinder units installed with standard-length screws in doors with engineered cores rather than solid wood. The cylinder rotates slightly, misaligning the tailpiece with the bolt mechanism.
  • The bolt does not fully extend into the strike plate. Seasonal expansion in California’s Central Valley heat can shift door frames, but more often we find the original installer used a shallow 7/8″ strike box rather than the full 1″ depth Sargent specifies. The bolt appears to lock while sitting proud of the jamb by an eighth inch.
  • The keyway has visible burrs or the key hangs up at the same depth. This is normal wear on brass pins after fifteen to twenty years of use, accelerated in coastal California by salt air corrosion. Attempting to force the key past the hang-up point will snap the key or damage the plug.
  • The entire cylinder pulls forward when you withdraw the key. The retaining clip or set screw has failed, often because a previous rekeying left the set screw undertorqued. On Sargent mortise cylinders this can drop the cam into the door cavity, requiring door disassembly to retrieve.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range What’s Included
Sargent grade-2 deadbolt replacement (standard door prep) $280-$360 Lockset, strike reinforcement, labor, debris removal
Sargent grade-1 commercial deadbolt installation $380-$480 Heavy-duty lockset, security strike, door prep if needed, labor
Retrofit from non-Sargent to Sargent (new door prep required) $340-$460 Template drilling, lockset, strike, fill and finish old holes
Rekey to match existing master key system $45-$75 per cylinder Pinning to code, two new keys, key code registration

What moves the price within these ranges: door thickness over 1-3/4″ requiring extension kits, steel door sleeves for fire-rated assemblies, and accessibility compliance hardware for California commercial properties. We quote flat before the truck rolls - the price on the phone is the price on the invoice. Every Sargent installation carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise, backed in writing with no paperwork to file if something needs adjustment.

Seniors and veterans receive a permanent 5% discount. If your repair total exceeds $250, ask about our $50 standing offer.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one thing a homeowner can safely check: remove the two screws from the interior thumb turn and verify the tailpiece is seated squarely in the bolt mechanism. If it has slipped out, reseating it may restore function temporarily.

Everything else benefits from a trained hand. Drilling a new cross-bore for a Sargent deadbolt requires a door jig and sharp hole saws; a wandering bit will chew through the door face and ruin the veneer. The strike box must be mortised to the correct depth with clean shoulders, or the bolt will bind every summer when the frame swells. And if your Sargent unit is part of a master key system, one mis-pinned cylinder compromises the entire key hierarchy.

We tell you the price before the truck rolls, and we put everything in writing - that part has never changed. Call (833) 294-4584 for a flat quote and same-day scheduling.
