Medeco Car Key Cutting in California, CA | Strongbox Lock & Safe Co. of California

Medeco Car Key Cutting: The California Owner’s Guide

Medeco car key cutting in California typically runs $145-$285 installed, depending on key blank type and whether your vehicle uses a transponder chip or sidewinder cut. We stock Medeco-compatible automotive blanks for most domestic and import models, and we can usually cut and program same-day at your location. Most California owners first realize they need a new Medeco key when the ignition starts sticking, the key won’t turn smoothly in a morning chill, or a worn duplicate finally snaps off in the door.

Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco’s automotive line breaks into three families you’re likely to encounter in California. The original Medeco Biaxial system uses angled pin tumblers with sidebar coding, common in fleet vehicles and older GM trucks through the early 2000s. Medeco3, the current standard, adds a sliding sidebar with a third locking dimension; you’ll find these in commercial vans, municipal vehicles, and some higher-end personal trucks where key control matters. The newer Medeco X4 uses a conventional pin tumbler paired with Medeco’s proprietary keyway, often specified for mixed fleets that need restricted blanks without the full Biaxial cost.

Identifying which you have is straightforward if you know where to look. The bow, or head, of a genuine Medeco key is stamped with the series: “Biaxial,” “M3,” or “X4.” The key blank number follows, something like 10R1 for a Biaxial GM single-sided or 51S7 for an M4 Ford transponder. If the stamping is worn down, the keyway profile tells the story: Biaxial has a distinctive angled groove on each side; M3 adds a center milling; X4 looks closer to a standard Schlage keyway but won’t accept non-Medeco blanks.

We carry both OEM Medeco blanks and Strattec aftermarket equivalents where the application allows. For a personal vehicle you plan to keep, OEM is our recommendation; the nickel-silver alloy holds up better to California’s combination of dry heat and occasional coastal humidity that can accelerate wear. Fleet managers sometimes prefer Strattec for cost on high-turnover vehicles, and we stock those too.

Signs Your Medeco Car Key Cutting Is Failing

  • The key sticks in the ignition on cool mornings. This usually means the cut edges have worn rounded from years of insertion. Medeco’s angled cuts are precise, and even slight wear changes how the pins ride the slopes. In California’s Central Valley, dust infiltration accelerates this; the key starts catching on the first pin stack.
  • You need to jiggle or wiggle to get the key to turn. The sidebar isn’t engaging cleanly, either from wear on the key’s side milling or from sidebar spring fatigue inside the lock. On Medeco3 keys, the center milling wears faster than owners expect because it’s the highest-friction surface.
  • The duplicate works worse than the original. A copy made from a worn original reproduces the wear, not the factory spec. Medeco blanks are cut on specialized duplicators with angled cutters; a standard key machine can’t replicate the Biaxial angles, and even some locksmiths skip the sidebar milling entirely.
  • The remote head separates from the metal blade. Common on Medeco transponder keys for Ford and Toyota applications. The potting compound cracks in heat, and California summer dashboard temperatures finish the job. Once moisture gets to the chip, the key may still turn the lock but won’t start the engine.
  • The key snaps at the shoulder under normal pressure. This almost always means the key was a poorly made duplicate, cut too deep at the shoulder stress point, or that the original was brass rather than nickel silver. Medeco specifies nickel silver for automotive precisely because brass fatigues faster under cyclic loading.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range What’s Included
Standard Medeco key cut (no chip) $145-$195 OEM or Strattec blank, precision cut, function test
Transponder key cut + program $195-$285 Blank, cutting, chip programming, 2 spare valet keys tested
Broken key extraction + replacement $165-$245 Extraction, new cut, ignition inspection for damage
High-security sidewinder (laser cut) $225-$285 M3 or X4 blank, CNC cut, sidebar alignment verify

What drives the range is mostly the blank itself. A basic Medeco X4 for a 2015 Chevy runs toward the lower end; a Medeco3 transponder with integrated remote for a late-model Ford F-250 runs higher. We quote flat before we drive, and that price includes cutting, testing in all locks, and programming if needed. Every key we cut carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise: if it doesn’t turn smoothly, we recut or replace at no charge. No paperwork to file, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can verify your key series from the bow stamp, and you can check whether the problem is the key or the lock by testing your spare in the same cylinder. If the spare works smoothly, the original is worn and needs replacement. That’s useful information to have when you call.

What you shouldn’t do is attempt to file, sand, or otherwise modify a Medeco key yourself. The angled Biaxial cuts and the sidebar milling are measured in thousandths of an inch. A file in the wrong place turns a recoverable key into scrap metal, and more importantly, a damaged key can jam in the ignition or door, turning a $185 key replacement into a $400 extraction and lock rebuild. Transponder keys carry an embedded chip; improper handling can corrupt the programming and require dealer-level equipment to recover.

We carry the duplicators, the blanks, and the programming tools on our service vehicles. For most Medeco automotive applications in California, we can cut and test while you wait. Call (833) 294-4584 and we’ll quote you a flat price before the truck rolls.
