We opened this branch in 1984, the same year the parent brand was building its name back east. We’d been working locks in California already, moonlighting from a van with a magnetic sign and a rotary phone. The moment we knew we needed to do something different came on a Tuesday afternoon in Woodland Hills. A woman called us after another company had drilled her front deadbolt, handed her a bill for four times the phone quote, and left her door splintered. She was shaking when she met us at the threshold. We fixed what they broke, charged her what we’d said we’d charge, and sat on her porch steps afterward drinking the coffee she’d made. That was the day we committed to bringing Strongbox’s way of working to California: flat prices quoted on the phone, licensed techs who show ID at the door, and no surprises on the bill. The iron box where your grandfather kept the deed - that’s what Strongbox means to us. Something solid, something that keeps its word.
Our Founder’s Personal Connection to the Locksmith Trade
We got into this trade the old way, by accident and then by obsession. A landlord in Santa Clara needed someone to rekey six units in a weekend. We were handy, unemployed, and desperate enough to say yes. Bought a basic pinning kit from a closing hardware store, spread the parts on a kitchen table under a bare bulb, and worked until our fingers cramped. The smell of brass shavings and graphite. The click of a cylinder falling into place for the first time. We didn’t sleep that weekend, and we didn’t want to.
That was over 42 years ago. Since then we’ve picked open frozen mailboxes in Fresno summers, drilled out rusted safe bolts in Sacramento basements, and sat with locked-out parents in Long Beach driveways at dusk while their kids watched from the car windows. What gets us out of bed isn’t the lock. It’s the person on the other side of it. Someone who’s had their trust broken by a $19-ad scam, someone who needs to feel safe in their own house tonight.
If we weren’t doing this, we’d probably be fixing something else. Old motorcycles. Antique clocks. Anything with parts that talk back to you when you learn their language. We’ve spent 42 years with our hands in locks, safes, and security hardware. Training started with that first pinning kit and never stopped. Yale, Baldwin, Mul-T-Lock - we’ve certified on their systems, attended their factory schools, and learned what each line does best and where it falls short. We don’t send anyone to your door we wouldn’t send to our mother’s.
What separates us from a franchise technician running between appointments is simple: we’re still the ones who answer when something goes wrong. Still the ones who drive back at 7 PM because a latch isn’t catching clean. On weekends you’ll find us restoring vintage padlocks or teaching the trade to local apprentices.
